Laura Asherman is a documentary filmmaker, sculptor, and educator from Atlanta, GA. During her residency at Azule, Laura split her time between two creations: a stop-motion animated film and an abstract paper mache sculpture.
Laura transformed Azule’s music studio into a makeshift darkroom to film stop-motion sequences for an upcoming documentary. Her animations featured ropes, magazine collages, and natural materials gathered from the residence and its surrounding areas. She sees stop-motion as a fascinating blend of her filmmaking and sculptural skills.
During breaks from the tedious and painstaking work of stop-motion animation, Laura dedicated time to refining a new sculpting method. Employing scrap wood, chicken wire, paper mache clay, and magazine cutouts, she fashioned an abstract sculpture. Laura found that engaging with two distinct art forms simultaneously nurtured her creativity, tapping into varied aspects of her artistic prowess.
