WHAT TO EXPECT?
A beautiful place with a lot of things to discover, a wonderful architecture and great people.
Hot Springs is 7 miles away; Asheville is 50 miles away.
AZULE, as an emerging community-based organization, is developing a retreat and residency program for artists and craftsmen, writers, architects, builders and environmentalists, academics, educators, social workers or researchers, or anyone who wish to enjoy Appalachia and Azule way of life or wishes to get involved. Following our mission we are encouraging collaborations between residents.

THE MAIN HOUSE :
The architecture has been created by Camille Shafer, using harvested or reused materials with traditional techniques. With the help of many others the place has been - and still is - shaped into a work of art. Despite the fact that Azule is meant to be a permanent work-in-progress, comfort and amenities are getting better. Plan to be amazed but do not expect luxury. Every floor is basically - if not always comfortably - accessible.

THE UPSTAIRS includes:
- A bedroom with a single and a double bed
- A shared full bath and half bath
- A studio with a study room with a very large light table and a double bed on a loft
- A large room with a floor good enough for exercises, dance rehearsals, yoga and similar activities
- In the near future a 'Dormitory' area with four bunk beds will be installed
- A small sun room is presently not available for residents

THE MAIN FLOOR includes various spaces that are not separated by full walls.
- A very large room called "The Library", can be used as a workroom or a meeting/conference room for up to twenty people
- A basic office for AZULE and residents
- A kitchen, shared between residents, provides all necessary utensils and some basic items like salt, spices, oil, paper towels, etc
- A dining area
- A special sitting/rest area, which may also be a bed for single or double occupancy
- A small study room
- A half bath and an accessible half bath; (an accessible shower soon to be ready.)
- A music room and a control room are presently not available for residents

THE BASEMENT includes:
- A large main room (which receives broad daylight) and a stage. Both can be used for events, and are available for studio work and workshops. There is an acoustic piano and an old set of drums
- A half bath, access to water and a laundry machine. No dryer, the sun will do
- Other storage place and a darkroom are presently off limits for residents

OTHER BUILDINGS and THE LAND: can be explored by all, except the "Old Workshop".

COMPUTER and PHONE ACCESS:
- Internet is provided through the electrical company. Wifi is installed.
- No cellular phones seem to work at AZULE' main house, but they do behind the barn and a mile away on the road. A shared landline is available for residents.

FEES
There is a basic fee schedule for Retreats and Residencies.
Weekly fee schedule for private bedroom is $350 per person. Additional person $50.00.
Dormitory resident: $200. Discounts apply for groups. Charges for a long weekend would be 2/3 of the weekly rate.
We are open to discuss many ways to waive the fees, including specific partnerships, in-kind contributions, work exchanges or specific applications of your work. As a 501c(3) organization, we may be able to help you to apply for a small grant as well.

WHAT TO BRING: Bring your linens and towels.
You are responsible for your own cooking. Bring your own items or plan to drive to Hot Springs (small convenient stores), Marshall (one or two Large grocery stores) or Asheville (everything you may imagine). You may be invited by Camille Shafer, another resident or locals and you may invite them as well if you wish for meals or visits.
No pets allowed unless they are necessary companions.

Upon arrival you will be given a tour of the place and a run through of our general rules, including recycling procedures, and the phone numbers you may need for emergency. We can also review the special needs of your work at this time.

NEED TO RELAX WHILE AT AZULE, LOOKING FOR A NEW PROJECT?
Weeding are always welcome and gardening is a work in progress that can always use attention. Please ask.
