AMERICAN PORTRAITS

Each of these 36 portraits was realized in the following conditions:

1. The subject was sitting in front of the photo camera in total darkness
2. The lightning of a flash bulb fired at a moment quite unforeseeable for the subject, within a lapse of time from 1 second to 5 minutes
3. The subject received no other recommendations than the one to think the shooting will happen at any moment
4. One single image was registered, the experiment never being renewed for the same person
5. The waiting time (mentioned on each picture next to the name of the subject), was predetermined according to a random method
6. I, myself, was standing in front of the subject, respecting an absolute silence and operating the camera manually.
